The vulva’s climate: factors that affect vaginal pH

Written by: Anna Marešová

In the last blog, we wrote that optimal vaginal pH should be slightly acidic in an adult woman, thanks to the proper production of lactic acid. This acidity helps protect the intimate parts against hostile bacteria and infections. However, there are several factors that affect the vulvar climate and vaginal pH every day.

Diet

Wrongly chosen foods such as alcohol, coffee and caffeinated drinks can throw off the optimal vaginal pH. They can cause the pH to shift more towards the alkaline (alkaline) side. Conversely, for example, white yogurt, which is slightly acidic, is a good helper if you don't mind lactose. It contains lactobacilli and other beneficial bacteria that help maintain the body's bacterial and pH balance. In addition to yogurt, other probiotic foods you should reach for include kefir, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and fermented vegetables.

Antibiotics

While necessary in certain situations, they disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, which can lead to a change in pH. Here too, it is important to take care of proper hygiene and supplement the treatment with probiotics to restore the balance in the body as quickly as possible. Shower gel

Soaps and shower gels, it is important to choose those that are gentle and designed specifically for women's intimate hygiene. They are available for different age groupsbecause vaginal pH also varies with age.
Why your little daughters should not use adult intimate soap, you read on Gynelly’s blog.
